Kapok filling has been a favorite for decades. This ultra-soft and fluffy material comes from the pods of the kapok tree, often called silk java. On my own bed, I’ve got every one of our pillows! Choosing a pillow can be very personal and tricky to recommend. Surprisingly, it’s often easier to help someone pick the right mattress. With a few key questions, recommending mattress comfort levels is straightforward. But pillows? Those are the things we hug, scrunch, fluff, bunch up, and layer, making personal preference much harder to pin down.

Take me, for example—I’ve got my own system. I start with a wool extra-fill pillow propped against my headboard at a 45-degree angle, and then I layer another pillow (usually shredded rubber or kapok) on top at a different angle. As a side sleeper who always ends up on my back, I need neck support that can also flatten a bit. This setup works perfectly—for ME. If I wake up with a neck kink, I’ll switch to the buckwheat hull pillow. It’s firm and supportive, though not exactly soft. I rarely use the organic cotton pillows because they tend to go very flat, which makes them better for stomach sleepers. As for the rubber contour pillow, it’s excellent but just a little too dense for my liking—though my son loves it!

The key to finding the perfect pillow is to choose one that matches your sleeping position. Once you know the right loft, it’s all about picking the material you think will be most comfortable. Don’t underestimate the importance of a good pillow—proper head, neck, and spine alignment can make all the difference in achieving a truly restful night’s sleep.
