We often have parents call us when their little one is ready to transition out of the crib and into a “big kid” bed. It’s an exciting milestone! Naturally, these parents want to ensure their child sleeps on a healthy, natural mattress free of harmful chemicals and petroleum-based foams, so they turn to us for guidance.

One of the first questions we ask them is: How long do you expect—or want—this mattress to last?

Some parents plan to upgrade to a larger mattress when their child becomes a teenager, so they’re looking for a solution that works for several years but isn’t necessarily built for the long haul. Others, however, hope the mattress will last until their child heads off to college—or even beyond. If you fall into the second category (as most parents do), we usually recommend investing in the Cozy Haven Natural Latex Mattress.

Sometimes, when we bring up this recommendation, customers initially hesitate because of the price difference compared to our Cozy Comfort Coil spring mattress. It’s understandable—they’re often calling with the intention of purchasing the coil mattress and want to know more details. That’s when we ask again: How long do you want the mattress to last?

Once parents realize they’re looking for a mattress that will support their child for a decade or more, we explain why natural latex is a better choice in the long run.

Let me be clear: the Cozy Comfort Coil is a great mattress. It’s a high-quality innerspring mattress that provides good support and comfort. However, because it contains springs—moving parts—it’s inherently more vulnerable to wear and tear over time. Even with excellent care, springs gradually lose their resiliency. For example, if your child starts sleeping on an innerspring mattress at the age of two, by the time they’re 12, that mattress will already be 10 years old. At that point, it will likely begin to lose some of its support and comfort.

On the other hand, our CozyPure Natural Latex Mattress has no springs to break down. It’s made from seven inches of dense, supportive, natural latex that holds up beautifully over time. Latex provides consistent support through your child’s growing years, into their teenage years, and often well into adulthood. It’s a long-term investment that may even serve as a guest bed in the future!

For parents seeking another option, we also offer the Cozy Rest Futon, which was specifically designed with kids in mind. This futon-style mattress features multiple layers of natural latex, creating a supportive five-inch core. It’s surrounded by our triple-fresh comfort quilting, which adds another half-inch of latex on each side, finishing at approximately seven inches thick. It’s a top-of-the-line layered futon that’s both durable and comfortable. (Just make sure to remind your kids: No jumping on the bed!)

So, when considering your child’s new mattress, here’s the nutshell version:

  • How long do you want the mattress to last? If it’s only for a few years, the Cozy Comfort Coil is a solid choice. If you want it to last into their teenage years and beyond, natural latex is the way to go.
  • Crunch the numbers. How much more will you spend upfront for latex, and how many more years will it last? Is the extra upfront cost less than replacing an innerspring mattress down the line?

When you factor in the durability, longevity, and health benefits of natural latex, you’ll likely find that it’s the better option in the long run—not just for your child’s sleep quality but for your wallet too.

Sleep well,
Cheryl
